The ear is a complicated and highly sensitive organ, and every ear is unique with respect to shape, size and position on the head. Our ears and the pertaining sense of hearing help us to perceive our surroundings and to orientate ourselves in everyday life. With an impaired sense of hearing, it is more difficult to understand the things going on around us. Be it music, language or individual tones – all these sounds can be captured only by our ears in the form of sound waves and then be converted into perceptions in the brain. Together with the eyes, the skin, the tongue and the nose, the ears are one of the five sensory organs with which we experience the world.
