First World War Part I – A European Catastrophe
When, at noon on 11 November 1918, the guns finally fell silent on all fronts, a war of truly apocalyptic dimensions drew to a close after 4 years, 3 months and 14 days. Even though countless armed conflicts shook mankind in the course of its history, the First World War with its 17 million casualties and immense damage exceeded anything previously seen. In view of its consequences it is hard, eventually, to speak about victors and vanquished. The former British Prime Minister David Lloyd George seriously claims in his war memoirs of 1922 that in 1914, peoples somehow slid into the war like into a natural catastrophe.
