The production of aluminium begins with the supply of alumina. This alumina is pure aluminium oxide. It is the raw material for alumina producers worldwide. What looks like the white sand of some dream beach here has been elaborately produced from aluminium ore, to be precise from bauxite. Good bauxite consists of 50 % aluminium oxide. In the so-called Bayer process pure aluminium oxide, also termed alumina, is obtained from bauxite. Alumina is so fine that it almost behaves like a liquid and can be transported via pipelines.
