Faizullah and Pamodou are two of about 500,000 refugees who fled to Germany from the crisis areas of the world between 2013 and the summer of 2015 and applied for asylum here. The reasons why people flee from their home countries are various. Be it war, political or religious persecution, hunger or poverty – ultimately, the situation in their homeland is so hopeless and desperate for all those people who set out to escape that they can image decent lives only in an alien land. The refugees hope for asylum, a haven that might become a new home in a new country. And they hope for a new life that is worth living again.
